Vancouver Sea Wall Open Again
Looks like the construction along the water North West of Science World has moved back from the water and has opened up the bike path again. I was able to take the kids for a bike ride from Kits Beach to the Stanley Park water park without having to bike on any road with cars. It was fantastic!
If you have kids, or anyone timid about riding with traffic, this is a fantastic bike ride.
Here’s some advice for the ride and for other bike riders on this path:
- Take it easy - it is not a speedway, most of the route is shared with pedestrians and casual bikers. I’m sure you are a super speedy healthy person that can go faster than most, but this isn’t the place for it.
- Share the path - if you are going super slow, or walking your bike. Move to the side please. There were a number of times where I saw three bikes across taking up the full width of the path with one person walking their bike. Share the path, don’t hog it.
- Be patient with the tourists - sure they are being stupid when they are walking or stopped chatting on the bike lane, but that doesn’t mean you are right in yelling out “get off the f’n bike path morons!” as you scream by them. I saw this three times on my weekend bike ride. Be polite, we’re Canadian! Use a bike bell, or have some balls and slow down or stop, look them in the face, and politely tell them where they are supposed to walk. If they still insist on walking on the bike path, then you kick ‘em in the nuts and tell them to got off the f’n bike path. At least give them a chance first.
- Bring a bike lock - there are lots of great places to stop along the way, especially with kids. There are lots of playgrounds, fields and two fantastic water parks along the ride. You’ll want to stop and you’ll want your bike when you are ready to ride again.
- Bring a water bottle - drink lots of water, don’t get dehydrated. There are a few water fountains along the way to refill.
- Look behind you before you lane change - since there are people zipping along, save yourself and the other speedy cyclist from a collission
- Bring a camera - there’s lots of unique art work and structures along the ride.
